Quan en català es fa servir el futur per a expressar una promesa o bé una sol·licitud, en anglès s'empra la combinació «will + verb». Exemples:

1) I'll do anything you tell me to. Faré qualevol que em diguis.

2) Will you tell me what you told him? Em diràs què li vas dir?

«will be + gerundi» (future continuous). L'ús més important del future continuous és per a referir-se a accions en curs en el futur. Exemples:

3) Tomorrow at this time we'll be having lunch with Shakira. Demà a aquesta hora estarem dinant amb la Shakira.

4) We'll be waiting for you when the train comes in. T'esperarem quan arribi el tren.

També es fa servir per a referir-se a una acció futura que passarà com és costum, és a dir, com sempre.

5) (pilot to passengers): "We'll be flying at an altitude of thirty thousand feet." (el pilot als passatgers): —Volarem a una alçada de deu mil metres.

[com és costum; sempre volem a aquesta alçada]

La locució catalana estar a punt per a significa "preparat o disposat per a una cosa" i es tradueix en anglès per la locució be ready to. En canvi, la locució estar a punt de, que destaca accions imminents, se sol traduir per a be about to. Exemples:

6) Is everybody ready to begin? Tothom està a punt per a començar?

7) I can't talk now, we're about to have dinner. Ara no puc parlar, estem a punt de sopar.

A vegades l'únic matís que hi ha entre «will + verb» i «be going to» és que aquest implica més certesa per part del qui parla. Exemples:

8) L'home del temps diu que demà plourà. The weatherman says (it's going to / it will) rain tomorrow.

9) Penso que el seu concert tindrà molt èxit. I think their concert (is going to / will) be very successful.

10) Faltarà molt coratge i iniciativa per part dels nostres polítics. It (is going to / will) take a lot of courage and leadership from our politicians.

La construcció «will have + participi» (future perfect) s'usa poc.

11) By the time she gets home she will have forgotten all about me. Al moment en què ella arribi a casa se m'haurà oblidat del tot.
